| Program Name: ART LITERACY: PUTTING PICTURES WITH WORDS Students: 1st through 7th Grade
Program Description: ART LITERACY: PUTTING PICTURES WITH WORDS is an art program that assists educators with creating a multidisciplinary art bookshelf for the classroom to enhance both art and content instruction. The bookshelf is actively used through art extension activities, and a self-monitoring book sheet that allows students to record what they have read off of the shelf. Targeted at the lower achieving art students, this bookshelf introduces students to the many career choices open to them in areas of art. Books are targeted at the students' level and encourage them to explore areas of individual interest. The book reflection form serves as both a tracking for teacher as well as students' retention of information. By adapting this bookshelf, teachers can infuse art into their curriculum in a easy way, and enhance curriculum content easily while increasing student interest in art.

| Program Name: BEAUTIFUL MOSAICS –THEN AND NOW Students: 5
Program Description: BEAUTIFUL MOSAICS –THEN AND NOW : The history, application and creation of a beautiful mosaic created by Elementary Art students within the constraints of a limited budget. Students take a journey through the history of mosaics, the connection of the modern use and creation of mosaics by viewing a master mosaic artist at work and the creation of their own mosaic trivet using inexpensive materials appropriate for younger students.
Students in the fifth grade art classes at Foothills Elementary explored the history and modern trends in the art of mosaics. They viewed a power point presentation and lecture by our school librarian, who went to Italy and created two beautiful mosaics under a master mosaic artist. Students then created a mosaic trivet of their own using broken pottery, glass globs and stone pieces.
By participating in this program, students started making connections of the art of mosaics from the history of ancient mosaics to the modern applications. They also gained an appreciation of design and craftsmanship that goes into an original piece of art by looking at the finished examples created by the Librarian. Students had the opportunity to use materials that they had not had previous experienced. The whole process of designing, creating, and adapting their own design to the materials available to them was exciting.

| Program Name: CUBISM/ABSTRACTION AT ANY LEVEL! Students: Fifth through Eighth Grades
Program Description: CUBISM/ABSTRACTION AT ANY LEVEL! simplifies a complex idea so students of any age level can grasp the concept. The lesson is taught through minimal lecture. The students analyze the works of George Braque, Paul Cézanne and Pablo Picasso. Students discuss the strategies of cubist artists and what they are trying to accomplish. After the discussion, an in-depth demonstration of the project procedures is given. Individual creativity and effort are highly stressed. As a result, each student creates a complex and colorful final product. The procedures require students to draw a still life in sections by moving around the room. Each section is drawn from a different seat. The objects merge together creating a complex composition. Composition, color and shading are stressed. The procedures are set up so every student will be successful and every drawing will be drastically different, even though they are drawn from the same subject.

| Program Name: MANDALAS- ARTS AND MINDS Students: 3, 4, 5 grade
Program Description: MANDALAS- ARTS AND MINDS
Third through fifth grade students paint mandalas (symmetrical circular pattern designs), write about their mandalas, and reflect upon other's mandalas. They learn to assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others.
Students are taught the concepts of a mandala, a word from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit, loosely translated to mean "circle". Mandalas are circular diagrams with internal geometry, containing meaningful symbolism to the artist. Students create a geometric chart of symbols and colors that have special meaning to them and their lives, and include those symbols and colors in their mandalas. After designing the mandala, each student paints their mandala using appropriate materials for their age/skill level. Students then write an essay or poem about the meaning within their mandala. After this, students get into four groups. Each group reflects on the mandalas of another group with the paintings and essays not matched. The groups are asked to look at the paintings, read the essays, and discuss which goes with which. This provides a tactile and visual means of learning and helps students learn to assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others. The project often culminates with a display of the student-made mandalas and their writing.

Program Description: WHAT DOES A DIDGERIDOO? is an after school project that teaches students to use simple tools to design and create their own musical instrument. Using the internet students search for didgeridoos looking at the various shape and design patterns so they can make their own unique instrument. Students cut the PVC pipe to a four foot length and lightly sand the ends. While wearing leather gloves and using a heat gun they heat up the pipe until it gets soft. As soon as it gets soft they mold it into their shape. When it is cool they lightly sand the entire outside of the pipe and paint it.
The students take their instruments to the band room where they work on an ethnic music piece.

| Program Name: WHAT PHOTOGRAPHY TELLS US Students: 5th Grade
Program Description: "What Photography Tells Us" is a program that uses photography to visually describe the interconnectedness of past and present by comparing photographs from the Civil War era with photographs famous today. Students will gain and understanding of life during the Civil War era and will learn how the medium of photography can record and recount history. They will also gain a historical perspective by comparing and contrasting images of the past and present. Students will focus on photographs from the Civil War period to learn about that period of American history. They will also see how photography has been used in various types of scientific endeavors including space exploration (photographs of planets & galaxies), medicine (X-rays & microscopes photos), and studies of ecosystems and the environment (photos of pollution, reclamation, etc.). During subsequent art classes, students will learn the elements of a good photograph taken by others. Students will analyze and critique photographs and also discuss how the photographs are a form of historical documentation. Students are then sent out on their own to capture life around them. The class will go on a neighborhood walk to identify and/or photograph elements (transportation, people's attire, and stores, etc.) in their own community. Students are encouraged to take pictures from different angles with interesting subject matter. A school photography exhibit will be organized to display student work and instill in these students a sense of pride and gratification. As part of the exhibit students compose a brief narrative for their photographs. Both photographs and narratives will constitute the student exhibit.
