Students: Kindergarten through Sixth Grades

Program Description: FROM BASEMENTS TO BROADWAY involves students in an all-school winter music performance of "The Nutcracker" by Tchaikovsky. It draws on multi-talents in your student population and fosters a great feeling of teamwork and strong self-esteem. Students study the composer and gain "ownership" of his music through their performance.

Program Name: HEARTBEAT OF THE VILLAGE    

Students: First through Fifth Grades

Program Description: HEARTBEAT OF THE VILLAGE introduces children in grades 1-5 to the music and culture of Ghana, West Africa. Students gain understanding of the language, customs and music of Ghana through active involvement in singing, drumming, dancing and playing games. The open-ended activities offer a format for creativity, musical response and dramatization. Positive attitudes are promoted as students enjoy the play of this exciting and fun-loving culture. This material is easily adaptable to several subject areas (social studies, music, physical education) and is appealing to a wide age group.

Program Name: KIDS KOMPOSE    

Students: Grade: 4,5

Program Description: KIDS KOMPOSE is a culminating project for fourth and fifth grade students. Using skills and concepts learned throughout their elementary music experience, they will create short melodies on classroom instruments. Next, students will create a working-copy of their compositions on paper. Together, with the music teacher, the students will edit and finalize their compositions before taking them into the computer lab. Once in the lab, the students will publish professional looking copies of their music on Finale Notepad software to be shared with other students and teachers through podcasting and video conferencing. Through the sharing process, students will receive feedback from the teacher as well as their peers.

Program Name: THE SCIENCE OF MUSIC    

Students: Sixth through Twelfth Grades

Program Description: THE SCIENCE OF MUSIC requires the students to apply scientific knowledge and skills to the field of music. Students are allowed to experiment, design, invent and understand the study of sound through the process of making and playing musical instruments. Students explore different ways of producing musical sounds. Activities include three hands-on laboratories, one demonstration, and one open-ended laboratory challenge.

Program Name: WAKE UP THE EARTH: MORRIS DANCING    

Students: Grade: 3,4,5,6,7,8

Program Description: WAKE UP THE EARTH: MORRIS DANCING is a program that utilizes English Morris and sword dancing for students in grades 3-8. Traditionally for men, these vigorous team dances with clashing sticks and sword patterns are appealing to children and young adults. Orff instruments can be used to play accompaniments or recorded music can be used. Morris can be done in the regular classroom or gym, depending on the number of children and space available. Some children can play instruments while others dance. They can take turns watching and dancing. Professional Morris Dancers can be invited in to demonstrate and inspire. Morris dancing can be part of a unit in music, physical education, or cultural history. It can be taught as a short unit or it can become an ongoing school-wide program

Program Name: WE ARE POETS    

Students: 5,6

Program Description: WE ARE POETS is a program where students are introduced to poetry with an emphasis on elements, forms, and types. Students then create a book of poems. The poetry books will have at least 12 poems to show different forms and styles. The poems are illustrated and bound into a book. Afterwards students share some of their favorite poems to students and parents in a "poetry cafe". Poetry classifications include: Narrative (Ballad, Ode, Nursery Rhyme), Dramatic: (Includes Mask or Persona, Apostrophe, Personification, Conversation), Couplet: (2 lines-Rhymes), Trecet: (3 lines with various rhyming patterns), Quatrain (4 lines various rhyming patters.), Haiku (3 lines of 17 syllables), Cinquain (5 lines unrhymed with specific rules), Free Verse, Limerick (5 lines with strong beat rhyming pattern aabba), Lyrical voice, Model of a poet,
And student choice. Above standard includes 5 extra poems of student choice (Pattern, Concrete, Nonsense verse).
