| Program Name: CELEBRATION Students: 1st through 2nd Grade
Program Description: Celebrationn! is an opportunity for students to "plan" a party utilizing physical education concepts. They accomplish this by exploring party ideas with fun movements that looked and felt like candles on a birthday cake. Students also improvised shapes for a birthday cake. Basic motifs evolved to become a birthday cake, candles and letters for the cake. Actions, dynamics and space were incorporated and refined to produce an original dance suitable for primary students.

| Program Name: DANCING PIONEERS ALONG THE OREGON TRAIL Students: Third through Fifth Grades
Program Description: DANCING PIONEERS ALONG THE OREGON TRAIL helps third grade students understand the drama of the Oregon Trail, which extended almost two thousand miles across the country. Along the way, the Pioneers entertained themselves with songs and dances from many European cultures. Music and dance were essential elements of life during the extended drive, and were a means of sustaining morale, and providing laughter and play at the end of each day's "drive." Different European dance steps, such as the "Irish Jig" and the "English Basket," were learned with a partner or within a small group, followed by a class discussion of how and where each movement originated. Students performed the dances in Pioneer costumes during the afternoon of "Pioneer Day."

Activities are performed as "able bodied" without any restrictions, then participate in the same situation but experience it with a disability. At the completion, students reflect and discuss questions and issues experienced during the experience.

| Program Name: WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE WE? Students: 6,7,8,9,10,11,12
Program Description: The high precision of GPS makes it an impressive technique for any imaginable application that requires the determination of positions (positioning), time (timing) and/or direction of motion (navigation) anywhere on Earth under all weather conditions. Although GPS is relatively new, many creative people around the globe have already devised and developed a myriad of applications. Though initially developed for the military, GPS now has civilian applications, both commercial and scientific - far outnumbering the military applications!
OBJECTIVE
By integrating social studies, science and math through the use of GPS, this activity demonstrates the very real and crucial roles and applications these core curricular areas play in our everyday lives.
ACTIVITY
After learning about how scientists use GPS to monitor movements in the Earth's crust, longitude and latitude, and how to determine an exact location fix, students will use hand-held GPS units to locate key features of their local area.
EXTENSIONS
The uses of GPS in the classroom are nearly limitless. Here are a few examples:
*Use GPS to locate several gravesites of historically important people (e.g., Jack Swigert, Apollo 13 astronaut and senator-elect from Colorado)
*Use GPS in the sport of Geocaching - locating "hidden treasure boxes" containing logbooks, electronically-trackable items, and trinkets for trading. (http://www.geocaching.com)
*Use GPS to create outdoor art (for example, creating string crop circles)
TOOLS
Hand-held GPS units (approximately $70-$90 each). One per team of 8-12 students
LIMITATIONS
You may use only the GPS and the coordinates provided.
ACTIVITY
After learning about how GPS is used in science, have students go in 2-3 teams and come up with coordinates for areas around the school. Students should describe where they are standing when they take the coordinates. Upon return to the classroom or computer lab, check the coordinates on Google Earth (or similar program) and determine the amount of error found (if any). Following the check of the coordinates, allow students to locate their houses or a variety of sightseeing destinations, such as the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, the Eiffel Tower, The Great Wall of China, Vatican City, Pearl Harbor, or, for students who are from other areas of the world, their homeland.
